This Giving Tuesday, turn hunger into hope.
Happy Giving Tuesday! Today is the day to come together and give back to make a difference in our community. Whether you're an individual, family, organization, or business, everyone can have an impact. Let's show our generosity and spread love today. Please read the story and watch the video below witnessed by one of our volunteers.
“Give Her My Meal” — A Story of Compassion That Inspires Us All
Meals on Wheels Spokane volunteer, Rene Guerrero, recently delivered emergency meals to Bev, a woman living in low-income housing. As he unpacked the food, he noticed an open bottle of ketchup on the floor. When he asked about it, Bev said softly,
“I eat that when I have nothing else.”
Despite the cold in her apartment and the empty shelves in her pantry, Bev was focused only on expressing gratitude for what she received.
Later that day, Rene shared Bev’s story with another senior on his route, an 87-year-old woman named Lois, who lives with Parkinson’s and cancer. As he told her about Bev’s situation, Lois’s eyes filled with tears. She paused, then said something that stopped him in his tracks:
“You can give her my meal next time.”
That simple, selfless offer said everything about the kind of people we serve, seniors who have every reason to hold tightly to what little they have, yet their instinct is to share.
Every day, Meals on Wheels Spokane delivers more than food. We deliver compassion, connection, and hope. We serve people like Bev, who are fighting hunger and isolation, and we are inspired by people like Lois, whose generosity shines even in the face of hardship.
This Giving Tuesday, you can be part of this story. Your donation helps ensure no senior in Spokane is left hungry or forgotten. Together, we can make sure no one has to “eat ketchup when they have nothing else.”
